兩漢魏晉南北朝與西域關(guān)系史研究 本書特色
適讀人群 ：國(guó)內(nèi)外民族史、古代中本叢書的研究范疇是公元前六世紀(jì)至公元六世紀(jì)的中亞史。 這一時(shí)段的中亞史有各種原始資料，其中漢語(yǔ)資料無(wú)疑是*關(guān)鍵的。可以說，沒有漢語(yǔ)資料，這一時(shí)段的中亞史無(wú)法構(gòu)建。西方（包括印度、俄羅斯）學(xué)者研究這一時(shí)段的中亞史已有一個(gè)半世紀(jì)，成績(jī)可圈可點(diǎn)。其主要缺點(diǎn)是沒有充分利用漢語(yǔ)史料。彌補(bǔ)這一缺憾的是日本學(xué)者，從白鳥庫(kù)吉算起，至少已有四代學(xué)者投身這一時(shí)段的中亞史研究，其主要特色正是利用漢語(yǔ)史料。可惜的是，日本學(xué)者很少英譯自己的論著，西方學(xué)者又多不習(xí)日語(yǔ)，因而日本學(xué)者的有關(guān)成果罕見引用。余氏的研究不僅填補(bǔ)了中國(guó)中亞史研究的空白，而且比日本學(xué)者更充分地利用了漢文史料，且不說余氏以漢語(yǔ)為母語(yǔ)，對(duì)漢語(yǔ)史料的理解應(yīng)勝過日本學(xué)者。 該文集的出版則有助于西方學(xué)者理解和運(yùn)用漢語(yǔ)史料，使國(guó)內(nèi)中亞史的研究深入世界，繼而使得世界史意義上的古代中亞史研究更上層樓。 十本英文著作大部分已在國(guó)外發(fā)表。著者的譯文均經(jīng)Prof. Victor H. Mair（梅維恒）和Dr. Bruce Doar（陶步思）修改、編輯。兩位都是優(yōu)秀的學(xué)者——母語(yǔ)是英語(yǔ)、精通漢語(yǔ)、有豐富的編輯經(jīng)驗(yàn)、熟悉古代中亞歷史，*主要的是極端負(fù)責(zé)的工作精神。十本英語(yǔ)論著發(fā)表時(shí)間跨度較大（1990—2017），又經(jīng)過不同的英語(yǔ)編輯，原譯文差異不小，這一次由著者本人歷時(shí)2年，做了統(tǒng)一譯文的工作。

A STUDY OF THE HISTORY OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE WESTERN & EASTERN HAN, WEI, JIN, SOUTHERN & NORTHERN DYNASTIES AND THE WESTERN REGIONS是同作者《兩漢魏晉南北朝與西域關(guān)系史研究》一書的英文版，為作者研究?jī)蓾h時(shí)期中西交通史的經(jīng)典專著。本書分為上下兩篇，上篇重新討論了魏晉南北朝各代同西域關(guān)系的研究，將經(jīng)過檢驗(yàn)的成果組織成一個(gè)比較完整的體系。下篇就若干重要而又必須進(jìn)一步推敲的專題，如張騫西使、甘英西使、通西域路線戊己校尉、李柏文書，以及吐魯番文書有關(guān)年號(hào)等，進(jìn)行了研究；也都是從前人的研究成果出發(fā)，得出與前人不同的結(jié)論。

INTRODUCTION “The Western Regions” is a geographical concept as seen in the “official history books” of the Western Han 漢, Eastern Han 漢, Cao-Wei 曹魏, Western Jin 晉, and Northern and Southern dynasties, which refers to a vast region to the west of the Yumen 玉門 and Yang 陽(yáng) Barriers under most circumstances, but sometimes refers to the Tarim Basin and its surrounding area. In other words, it had both a broad sense and a narrow sense. In this book, “the Western Regions” is used in the broad sense, but the focal point of the study is located in the region which is called Central Asia today, especially to the east of the Pamirs. This was determined by the actual relationship between the Western Regions and the Western Han 漢, Eastern Han 漢, Cao-Wei 曹魏, Western Jin 晉, and Northern and Southern dynasties. The study of the history of the relationship between the Western Han 漢, Eastern Han 漢, Wei 魏, Jin 晉, and Northern and Southern dynasties and the Western Regions is an important topic in the study of ancient Chinese history; its significance is self-evident. The task of this book is to ascertain the related historical facts as far as possible. The facts can be summarized as follows: The purpose of the Western Han 漢, Eastern Han 漢, Cao-Wei 曹魏, Western Jin 晉, and Northern and Southern dynasties in managing the Western Regions can be summed up with the statement “it would be possible to extend [Han 漢] territory for 10,000 li 里. With [the help of] a series of interpreters, those whose customs were exotic could be brought to court, and imperial power and prestige could be exercised throughout the area within the Four Seas”. It is quite obvious that this purpose was mainly political. In contrast, the purpose of the various states of the Western Regions in contacting the Western Han 漢, Eastern Han 漢, Cao-Wei 曹魏, Western Jin 晉, and Northern and Southern dynasties was primarily economical, namely the “wish to exchange their goods and conduct trade”. Of course, they were also the interested in absorbing the advanced culture of the latter, namely they “admired and took pleasure in the Middle Kingdom”. In addition, the various states to the east of the Pamirs also sought protection from the depredations of the nomadic tribes beyond the Great Wall.

余太山先生，是著名的中亞古史研究奠基性學(xué)者。畢業(yè)于中國(guó)社會(huì)科學(xué)院研究生院歷史系，后于歷史所任職，1993年起為研究員，曾任中外關(guān)系史研究室主任。專治古代中亞史、中外關(guān)系史。現(xiàn)為中國(guó)社會(huì)科學(xué)院榮譽(yù)學(xué)部委員。
