    The new iBT (Internet-Based TOEFL), launched in 2006, is a challenging and

exciting new development in TOEFL testing both for the student and the instructor.

The major difference between the iBT and its predecessor, the CBT (Computer-

Based TOEFL), is the inclusion ora new spoken component which gives testees the

chance to use their hard-earned English speaking skills to achieve higher TOEFL

scores. This book is the fruit of the authors' own extensive TOEFL testing and

teaching experience. We believe that TOEFL-iBT Speaking is the most accurate

     For TOEFL instructors, this book-plus-CD-ROM is ideal as a stand-alone

multimedia resource for intensive iBT speaking courses. Each unit — including

test tasks, notes and audiovisual support —is the product of constant refinement

in approaching the problems of the iBT spoken test, based on classroom application

as well as feedback from students who have gone on to achieve high test scores.

Thus, iBT speaking instructors can guide their students through the entire speaking

test process with total confidence in “the material”; this allows teachers to

devote valuable in-class time to the primary aspect of their job: giving students

individual attention for drilling and repeating the contents of each unit until they

     While TOEFL-iBT Speaking is a useful aid for the TOEFL instructor, the

authors' main focus in writing this book is the individual student, whose frustrations

we share in the classroom, and whose victories in the process of language-leaming

make our lives as teachers worthwhile. Realizing that many learners may be unable

to afford the time or expense of a formal TOEFL class, the writers of this book wish

to provide a perfect model for “home-study” of the iBT speaking test. In addition to

the unit tasks which make up the book's content, we have put as much“meat”as

possible into the book; readers will find a wealth of practical strategies and advice
